Calculation Methodology

Overview

Each PEC represents a specific quantity of carbon-free energy generated at a particular location and time. By associating each PEC with the corresponding MER, the registry enables the calculation of the carbon impact (emissions avoided) for that specific quantity of energy.

Carbon Impact Calculation Formula:

CarbonImpact(kgCO2e)=Energy(MWh)×MER(kgCO2e/MWh)Carbon Impact (kg CO2e)=Energy (MWh)×MER (kg CO2e/MWh)

The MER reflects the emissions rate of the marginal unit on the grid at the time and location of generation. For more information, see the Appendix.

Example:

  • PEC Energy: 0.5 MWh

  • MER: 400 kg CO₂e/MWh

  • Carbon Impact: 0.5×400=200kgCO2e0.5×400=200 kg CO₂e
